Why Accounting? Where Accounting Meets Technology

Technology has always been an interest of mine. As a child, while most kids were asking for action figures or the latest video game, I was asking my parents for a copy of the newest operating system. Studying software development felt like a natural choice, and I genuinely enjoyed learning how to build applications, solve problems, and think logically. However, when it came time to pursue software development as a full-time career, I realized it wasn't the right path for me. I found myself back at the drawing board, wondering what I wanted to do next. While exploring different career options, I came across accounting. At first, I was apprehensive. I had never considered myself "the numbers guy," but I soon realized that was based on a misconception. The more I learned about accounting, the more I recognized its similarities to software development. Both disciplines require analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a structured approach to solving problems. Whether I'm debugging code or analyzing financial statements, I'm breaking complex problems into smaller pieces, identifying patterns, and working toward an accurate solution. Using different financial reporting methods and interpreting financial information engages many of the same problem-solving skills that first drew me to programming. During my final term of my undergraduate degree, I took an introductory auditing course that revealed just how interconnected accounting and technology truly are. The course introduced me to the role technology plays in modern auditing, from analyzing systems and controls to understanding how businesses process and store information. It was a realization that genuinely excited me. As businesses continue to become more automated and digital, accountants will increasingly need to be comfortable working with information systems, databases, and technologies that support financial processes. In many ways, the skills required to understand and improve these systems overlap with the same skills used in software development. Ultimately, two fields that I once viewed as completely different turned out to share much more common ground than I expected.
